Shabana Azmi, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut, Kiran Rao, Anupama Chopra and American filmmaker Ava DuVernay took part in a conversation on Women in Film that was powered by Lifebuoy and their initiative ‘Help a Child Reach 5’ that examined the position of women in film today.
The session commenced with the screening of a moving film about Lifebuoy’s ‘Help a Child Reach 5’ initiative. Made by acclaimed director Anand Gandhi, the film which deals with the issue of infant mortality left the audience visibly touched. The discussion was then kicked off by Anuvab Pal who moderated the conversation and touched upon important topics ranging from the relation between gender and characters to the wage disparity that still remains prevalent across many industries.
In response to a question, Kangana Ranaut expressed, “I feel it’s not about female or male centric characters, it is about a character that has lived and been loved.”
Vidya Balan shares her views stating that, “I have seen growth and I am happy with it. You have to look at the journey and not the destination.”
Talking about the portrayal of women in films, actor Shabana Azmi said, “It has been left to parallel cinema to portray women with any kind of complexity”.
Ava DuVernay spoke about the issues women face in Hollywood and said, “There is a definite kind of film a woman is allowed to make”. She then added, “because of economics women are not given the budget or trust to make films apart from romantic comedy.”
Kiran Rao also expressed that “women must stand up and know their worth and their value”
The panel was preceded by a brunch that celebrated women in film. Attended by women at the top of their game in media and film, the occasion was made even more special by Sula Vineyards which did a tasting of their new sparkling wine- Brut Tropicale.

Not many know that as a kid Ekta Kapoor had always wanted to be a film journalist. She had also done a couple of stories as a cub reporter (with the assistance of a staffer) for gossip magazine Stardust. Much to the chagrin of her dad, he was quite sure that his daughter was capable of more than just unearthing scoops about his Bollywood clan.
Today, the business Czarina that she is, Ekta has a strong nose for spice and knows exactly what sells. Be it her stint with television where she changed the face of the small screen, made her millions, Ekta has also proved that a low-budget-high-on-content film can work wonders at the box-office. “LSD” and “Ragini MMS” are two such low budget films which have been commercially viable hits for her non-commercial film banner.
THE DIRTY PICTURE has already evoked enough curiosity coz of the story line which is allegedly inspired by South sex siren Silk Smitha. How much of Silk is there in this film, one can rest assured that it has the right dose to grab not just the eye-balls but tickle the funny bones of the front benchers.
One such exclusive sneak-peek on the film which is still a close guarded secret hit our hands. Since the storyline borders on the South film industry and the era when double-meaning dialogues were rampant, read on to slurp the flavour of the film.
DOUBLE MEANING ENTENDRES IN ‘THE DIRTY PICTURE’
Naseeruddin Shah’s wife, along with their 6 month old baby, visits the location where Vidya is shooting. Getting into a brief discussion, Vidya asks to hold the baby.
Quite shocked at the comment coming from the heroine of her husband’s film, the wife does manage to read between the lines on what Vidya is hinting at. She retorts, ‘Tumhare paas toh til hain, lekin woh mere dil main bethaa hain’.
Vidya gives a cynical almost sadistic smile, looks at Naseer’s wife and comments, ‘Woh toh tumhare dil mein bethtaa hoga, lekin mein toh uske til beh beththi hoon’
Impulsively without thinking twice, the wife retorts, ‘tumhe kaise pataa uske paas wahan til hain’.
Vidya doesn’t comment and roll her eyes with an impish glee of knowing where Naseeruddin has a ‘til’.
Knowing Ekta and her penchant for spice, gossip and controversy, one can wait and watch to see how this scene gets past the Censor’s eagle eyes when one can easily decipher what and where the ‘til’ is which is being spoken about in this scene.

The actress’ brother Vadlapatla Naga Vara Prasad had filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, on Tuesday, to withhold the release of the film.
He claimed that the film was based on tampered facts of her life and portrays his sister in an obscene manner. In response, to pre-empt any further roadblocks to the project, the filmmakers have filed caveat petitions in nearly 20 cities across the country to request that no petition against release of the film should be entertained without their knowledge.
However, the petition was not admitted. Speaking to Mumbai Mirror over the phone Smitha’s brother claimed that Kapoors had filed caveat petitions in about 20 courts across the country. “I received intimation from courts in various cities including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Vijayawada and Eluru (hometown)”, he said. Defending his decision to drag the makers of the film to court, he said, he said, he did so after Balaji refused to respond to him.
“Going by the news reports appearing in newspapers and telecast by the TV channels, the the movie is based on my sister’s life. Her character has been portrayed in the most obscene manner. Such scenes must be removed before its release”, he petitioned the court, accusing the filmmakers of making the movie without the family’s consent or knowledge.
With reference to the legal notice received and the ongoing speculation about the film, Balaji wishes to clarify that “The Dirty Picture” is the romantic journey of a fiercely ambitious starlet who dreams of making it big on the silver screen.
It draws inspiration from the strugglers in the 80s whose indomitable spirit made them emerge triumphant and create a unique space for themselves in a male-dominated film industry.
The film is not a formal biopic or biography, as is being speculated. It is a work of fiction, and any characters resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is coincidental.
Paying tribute to the controversial sex figure , The Dirty Picture directed by Milan Luthria archives the journey of the erstwhile sensation, Silk Smitha, played by Vidya Balan- her rise to stardom and her subsequent fall –
Also starring Nasseruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor ,Balaji’s Dirty Picture comes to a theatre near you December 2nd 2011.
