As Viacom 18 & Burmawala Brothers’s Players ,the official Bollywood remake of the Hollywood crime thriller The Italian Job closes in on its release, the film is receiving an unprecedented response as

Players -Abhishek Bachchan,Sonam Kapoor,Neil Nitin Mukesh ,Bipasha Basu,Bobby Deol,Sikander Kher and Omi Vaidya take the nation by storm.

The team of the Abbas-Mustan thriller went out on a limb and took time out of their busy schedules to promote the film on a pan – India level. As per official Foresight Analytics reports Players moved up from 29 to 32 on FTI. Interestingly, the improvement in FTI numbers of the film comes from Spontaneous Awareness (SA). The jump in SA is about 10.0 per cent points in just one week. With an increase in SA and FTI, Players already expect to open brilliantly with numbers coming from men and women in the 25+ age group.

The Players kick started their tour here in Mumbai with a never-seen-before music launch via an action-packed event with the stars performing stunts in front of a live audience. Followed by Abhishek Bachchan’s trip to Nagpur and Jaipur where he was joined by Abbas-Mustan .Talking about their fast-paced action thriller says Abbas-Mustan “People love the commotion in such films. The way the actors escape through tunnels and drainage pipes makes the film interesting. The double crossing and the scheming and plotting are something which keeps them glued to the screen. This is what we have retained in our film as well”.While in Jaipur ,Abhishek didn’t forget to make a pit-stop at Ajmer Sharif, while Sonam Kapoor and Bobby Deol set temperatures soaring in Chandigarh as they spoke about their characters in the film.

The next day was nothing short of hectic as the Players split to travel to different cities. While Abhishek Bachchan and Neil Nitin Mukesh traveled to Lucknow, Sonam visited Pune and Bipasha took off to Kolkotta. While in the city Bipasha Basu said “Players reflects the present age, and the change in look and feel is apparent and important. I am here in my favorite city at this time of the year and happy to soak in the Christmas-New Year celebrations in Kolkata”.Sonam Kapoor was the cynouse of all eyes at Cinemax,Inorbit Mall,Pune as she waved cheerfully to the crowds.Medical students were sure in for a treat as they were visited by Abhishek Bachchan

and Neil Nitin Mukesh who spoke to them at length and then dropped into radio stations.Said Abhishek Bachchan “It was a wonderful experience working on Players. Abaas-Mustan wrote a brilliant script and have made a lovely movie. Players is a masaledaar entertainer”

The film’s exclusive party at Sheraton had Bangalore buzzing as the Players partied into the wee hours of the morning – The team then took off to Ahmedabad where they visited the Reliance Digital Store to pay tribute to business icon Dhirubhai Ambani on his birthday.

The next city on the cards was Delhi -The capital city was abuzz with the PLAYERS bowling game at PVR Ambience Mall’s Blu-O bowling alley, where Players-
Abhishek Bachchan,Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and
Neil Nitin Mukesh went head-to-head to win an exclusive all-gold pin. No guesses here, Abhishek Bachchan who made an impressive 78 score, walked away with the coveted trophy as team mate Bipasha Basu cheered on.

The Delhi Metros was the place to be as audiences caught Players –Abhishek Bachchan,Sonam Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh in action ,as they unlocked a vault on the metros in the capital city.As part of the film’s promotions, the Players orchestrated a train heist much to their onlookers delight, in sync with the theme of the film.Post which they boarded the train followed by a friendly media interaction and thrilled their fans with some merchandise from the film.

Confirms Vikram Malhotra of Viacom18 Motion Pictures, “Players has one of the most thrilling and elaborate train heist sequences ever seen in a Hindi film and we wanted to highlight this for the audience ahead of the film’s release. The stunts, the pace, the action of this sequence will blow peoples’ minds when they see it in Players on the big screen.”

The team is pulling out all stops to promote the film and recently also visited Indore ,where Players Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor visited the budding chartered accountants in the city to boost their morale. Leaving behind the cliché red carpet, the Players are also soon to walk the “gold carpet” on the 4th January ,at the special fan screening in Dubai.

Exclusive interview – ABBAS MASTAAN- THE MYSTICAL, MAGICAL MANTRA OF THE ‘MEN IN WHITE’

Standard

BY ARYEMAN RAJ

They are Bollywood’s ‘men in white’, the director-duo with the Midas touch at the box-office. Their thrillers are eagerly awaited and they seem to be hitting the bull’s eye with the magic that jingles at the box-office. Speaking to Abbas Mastaan whose next film PLAYERS releases soon, one realizes that it is their simplicity and mastery over the trade of film-making that helps them create wonders. They have a pulse of what clicks with the audiences and the tadkaa that leaves soothing memories in the audience’s minds.

THE INTERVIEW

Why did you opt to remake ‘The Italian Job’ when you have been pioneers in creating successful ‘hit’ thrillers?

It was Viacom18 which approached us with the subject and suggestion that we could remake “The Italian Job”. Although we had never ventured into remaking a Hollywood film, we did reconsider it after great thinking. We were working out the mechanics of making the concept which could be acceptable and digestible to suit the palate of the Indian audiences. We saw both the versions (1969 and 2003) and worked hard to retain certain essences of the original in Players.

Apparently you have paid a bomb for the rights of remaking this Hollywood hit?

Well, fortunately we didn’t have a problem on the remake rights. Viacom18 is a sister concern of Paramount Pictures. So they clinched the deal for us. As directors, the onus was on us to make a ‘hit’ and entertaining film.

How much of the original version has been retained in Players?

We have chosen the theme of a gold heist and Indianized it completely. There are certain portions of the small buggy car chase scenes and some other thrills which have been incorporated from the original. We can challenge anyone in the audience that even if they see ‘The Italian Job’ just one day before the release and see ‘Players’, they will be zapped to see the difference in the two films.

Is there a dearth of Indian writers that you had to choose a successfully acclaimed Hollywood thriller?

We are always on the lookout of kick-ass scripts. We do meet a lot of writers who come forth with some unusual concepts. When quizzed and grilled, they do tell us that they have been inspired by certain Hollywood films. But as directors, it is our constant endeavour to deviate from what has been shown in films earlier. We do have a complete team of writers who work with us and our hits is the joint effort of some crazy brain-storming sessions.

Bobby Deol and Bipasha Basu have been lucky mascots, who have worked in most of your successful hits. Which one of them has been luckier for you?

We have never thought or considered (with a smile on their faces) who is the lucky mascot for us. Possibly the factor that both their names begin with ‘B’ is instrumental for the film. Our films have strong scripts with edge of the seat drama and some real out-of-the-box twists. That’s what differentiates us from the other thrillers which are being made. Bipasha did get launched in our film. All actors are equally important to us.

What is the mystical, magical mantra for making most of your films commercially hit at the box-office?

Frankly there is no mantra to box-office success. We strive for bringing to the table something that is thrilling, entertaining, has some good songs and appeals to the audiences. We work overtime to make each scene outstanding so much that it compels the audience to think while watching the film and try to decipher what is going to happen in the next moment. Sometimes some actors when they read the scene, they think the shoot would be completed in 5 hours flat. But we take almost 3 days to shoot it with precision. Film making is all about creating that edge-of-the-seat thrill that engrosses the audiences and gives a paisa vasool feeling. Films should also have a recall and repeat value. We have been making films for almost 34 years now and have made only 17 films till date. If we wanted we could have churned out films and amassed wealth. Films for us are a passion and creation of something elusive and entertaining.
