Bihar has an age old folk tradition of men dressing like women and dancing vigorously impersonating women characters, especially in marriages. Women were not allowed to perform earlier, so they dressed up men as women for performances.
This tradition dates back to the 11th century. Although the art is on decline but for Lalit Kumar this is more than just a form of entertainment. This is his livelihood which gives him the money to study further and run his house.
He started it as a desperate call to poverty, saw money coming in but soon it became his passion. He now wants people to recognise him as an artist and appreciate his talent so that he can earn more and complete his higher education.
