Devroop Sharma excels as Krishna…A STAR IN THE MAKING!

‘Shanti-Shanti… Its a War!’

Krishna at its best.

Ramu Ramanathan’s epic satire play ‘Shanti-Shanti… Its a War!’ directed by Ayatulla Khan presented by Rangrez theatre group was recently performed at Haute Haveli. The play speaks of contemporary thought of the women folk and the male-stereotypes of the epic giving it a different outlook. When there are good times, the bad loom in the horizon. But as always Krishna in his most nat-khat ways emerges to save the day. Bearing the lagam of everyone he travels from yug to yug. The play with its satirical punches cracks the audience from the very announcement.

Devroop Sharma a young learned actor from the Academy of Theatre Arts, Mumbai University seems to be a promising actor of today’s young generation. Resembling Krishna by playing the flute and maintaining a nat-khat smile, Devroop took multiple entries in various sub-characters illuminating various dimensions of the great epic of Mahabharat with his comic timing. Along with entertaining the masses, the play also puts down some questions onto them.

Apparently Devroop  is a talented Salsa dancer, trainer and an enterprising writer. He has a niche of excelling in various creative art forms. His infectious persona is so endearing that he has stolen the hearts of most ramp models who die to dance with him during Salsa sessions at Shiros. Watching him perform at the play, one can but not help comment that he is a STAR IN THE MAKING and will definitely go places.

Watch out for more on DEVROOP SHARMA in this space.

KASHISH roots for landmark ruling on Transgender Rights!

~ With the DARE TO DREAM theme, the LGBT International Film Festival 2014 returns with the 5th Edition ~

The Supreme Court of India granted recognition to Hijras and Transgenders by creating a ‘third gender’ status, deeming them a socially and economically backward category, hence granting them special provisions for admission to educational institutions and employment opportunities. The SC also added that if a person surgically changes his/her sex, then he or she is entitled to her changed sex and can not be discriminated.

This latest development on human rights is a hugely welcomed decision and gay activist, filmmaker and festival director of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival Sridhar Rangayan said, “This is indeed a landmark judgment that will have a far reaching effect on rights and welfare for transgender community in India. It will provide them right to education, health, employment and several other welfare schemes. It will make the community come out of the shadows and be part of the social mainstream”.

He also said that this year’s theme for KASHISH 2014: ‘Dare To Dream’ aptly reflects this emerging change.“Every year we program a large number of films on transgender issues from across the world and they have been greatly appreciated. This year too there is a spotlight on transgender films as well as a panel discussion planned to discuss the current scenario“, said Rangayan.

Highlighting the key transgender films, director of programming Saagar Gupta said, “Films on Transgender issues to watch out for at KASHISH 2014 are ‘Will This Change’ from Bangladesh, ‘My Mother’ from UK, ‘Sexicas’ from Spain, as well as ‘Rainbows Are Real’, ‘I’dentity’ from India, among several others. ‘Can You See The Real Me’ about the life of work of celebrity transgender hairstylist Slyvie is sure to touch many hearts and offer hope”.

Film Review : Bhoothnath Returns Rating: A must watch for every Indian.

Film Review : Bhoothnath Returns

Rating: 4 stars

A must watch for every Indian.

Nitesh Tiwari

By Aryeman Raj

Bhoothnath Returns is a topical film which has released at the opportune time of the elections. It not only divulges the stark realities of the psyche of the Indian mentalities when it comes to voting, but also forces you to think. We all expect change whereas we don’t change our thinking. The film just does that and is quite evident from the recent increase in voting numbers in the polls being conducted.

bhoothnath-returns-posterWhat starts off as a fantasy in the film is very competently handled by the director Nitesh Tiwari. Having Mr. Bachchan on board to give out the message and create an awakening is worthy. One never expected that the film which has no glamour element, nor an item number keeps you engrossed with its subtle story telling.

Writer Piyush Gupta has done a fantastic job. The music with the hit number is enthralling. Special mention to all the actors like Parth Bhalerao, Boman Irani, Usha Nadkarni who have stood out when pitted against a power house like Mr. Bachchan.

T-Series has once again arrived with its commitment for quality cinema and good music.  Watch this film before you cast your vote this season.

At the event first the guests were welcomed with bouquets and the traditional lamp was lit to make the auspicious beginning. Later the songs were screened and all the songs were received by thunderous applause. Especially the title song and a gazal sung by Suresh Wadkar became the instant hit.

Later director Mahesh Vaijnath Doijode expressed thanks to all and stand-up comedian Sunil Pal entertained the guests with his gigs. Following the event the party began and one must say all three producer brothers played the role of hosts perfectly.
