Churma Bhopali enters Lapataganj

Mukundi Lal Gupta, played by Rohitashv Gaur has an adversary in Lapataganj – Choorma Bhopali, a paan chewing opportunist with an authentic Bhopali accent and style of speaking.

Rohitashv, speaking about his character of ‘Choorma Bhopali’ says, “I am extremely excited to be able to play a double role and that too such vividly contrasting roles. I feel it is the ultimate challenge, test and opportunity for an actor to showcase his/her talent. It also shows the confidence a director has in you. I kept recalling the ‘Soorma Bhopali’ role played by Jagdeepji in Sholay and then did my homework and preparations. It was fun learning to speak with a Bhopali accent.”

Rohitashv has taken this role so seriously that he trained himself to get the authentic Bhopali accent right and started speaking with everyone on the sets in the typical Bhopali way. Not only that, he also started practising his lines while having ‘paan’ in his mouth to get his talking style correct to the extent that he was eating almost 40 paans a day.

Everyone on the set is very excited and impressed with the new avatar of Rohitashv and in fact his enthusiasm has rubbed off on his co-actors as well. All the artists and crew of Lapataganj have also started speaking in a Bhopali accent.

But, surprisingly his wife does not seem to be very impressed with him eating paan and has warned him not to touch Paan once the track is over. Says Rohitashv, “Another challenge I have is to get my wife fall in love with the character of Choorma Bhopali”.

What will happen next will Mukundi be rescued and will Lapataganj residents expose Choorma Bhopali and punish him? Will the builder succeed in his intentions?

Catch the action of Choorma Bhopali in Lapataganj Mon to Fri 10 pm only on SAB

Shahid & Priyanka’s Another Kahani

What: Trailer launch of TERI MERI KAHANI

Where : Cinemax,Versova

Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra preened for the cameras on Thursday evening at the launch of the first trailer of their film, Teri Meri Kahani, directed by Kunal Kohli. The trailer of the film looks very exciting and the film was trending on Twitter, thanks to the response the trailer received. This is the second film that Shahid and Priyanka have done together after Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey.

Both Shahid and Priyanka are seen in three different avatars over three time spans -1910, 1960 and 2012 – in the film, akin to ‘Three Times’ which features three separate love stories chronologically set in 1911, 1966 and 2005, with the same lead actors, Shu Qi and Chang Chen. The 2005 film was a hit and won several awards.

Priyanka Chopra wowed onlookers at Teri Meri Kahani theatrical trailer launch which was attended by Shahid Kapoor as well, in a bright orange cocktail dress. Dressed to impress in a tangerine Lanvin frock, she teamed it up with nude peep-toe pumps. Tumbling hair, a dark lip colour and a gold cuff completed her look. Is orange Priyanka’s colour? What do you think?

The storyline of Shahid Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer upcoming film ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ seemed to be very much on the lines of Taiwanese film ‘Three Times’. But director Kunal Kohli insists there are no similarities between the two and that its just a coincidence.

“To meet and part ways is there in every love story, be it ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Fanna’, ‘Hum Tum’ or ‘Veer Zaara’. Whatever popular love story you take..a love story is all about meeting and parting. But how they meet, how they part ways is different in every love story and even in this story, it is different,” he said. The film is up for release on June 22

John Abraham on Sperm Donation

While the release of JA Entertainment & Eros International’s Vicky Donor is around the corner, producer John Abraham opens up on the subject that is already being popularly talked about.

Says John, “Ever since the promos started airing, we’ve been getting mails and calls from fertility centers on how they can pitch in, without even seeing the film”. Adding that, “Even in India, soldiers and border security forces are known to do so when going to war or manning troubled areas.”

Ask the actor whether he would be open to donating himself and quick was his reply “Why not ? But if it happens, it would be for purely altruistic and philanthropic reasons and definitely not for commercial gains. As my lead actor Ayushmann says, if we can donate blood to blood banks to save a life, why can’t we donate sperms to give a life?”

Adds director Shoojit Sircar, “My writer, Juhi Chaturvedi is a woman. I told myself if she could talk about this. I could make a film on the subject. The endeavor is to bring the issue out of the closet in a light tone so that it is acceptable to every section of the audience”.

Produced by John Abraham, Eros International’s contemporary comedy Vicky Donor directed by Shoojit Sircar takes a light hearted look at the taboo attached to infertility and artificial insemination.

The film is scheduled to release April 20th, 2012.

In India, in the last 20 years, about 10 million girls have been killed by their parents either before or after they were born. The average death rate for girls under the age of one year was 72 per 1000 compared to 55 per 1000 among boys. The proportion of girls who are able to attend school in India continues to remain low. 54% females are literates compared to 76% males. The child sex ratio (determined between the age 1 day to 6 years) has declined to 914 from 2001 value of 927. The child sex ratio is lowest since our independence in 1947. It has been continuously reducing for the last 50 years. A closer look at the detailed demographics would reveal that the child sex ratio is less than 900 in 8 states across India – including the two biggest states – UP and Maharashtra.

Unusual character sketch creation for SHANGHAI

Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi have gone through a complete metamorphosis in Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai.  So much that both Abhay and Emraan are almost unrecognizable in the roles.  Those who have seen them on the sets have not been able to recognize them in their get up.

Writer-director Dibakar Banerjee too  admits  that  when he was writing the script of Shanghai, that it was none other than Abhay Deol that came to his imagination for Krishnan’s character.  He couldn’t imagine anyone else.  Then when he started writing Jogi’s sketch he remembered  Emraan Hashmi from Footpath (2003). “ I had recognized his talents in the film. He was completely approachable and capable of living his character on screen” says Dibakar.  But now that Emraan was a star Dibakar had his own inhibitions about Emraan agreeing to doing something so different. “Fortunately it took just five minutes for Emraan to say he was ready” says Dibakar.

What followed  informs Dibakar was  the process of brining the sketches to life which proved to be a grueling task.  “From  Moustaches to ear piercing, dark circles, lightly shaded,  paan-stained and yellowed teeth, tattoos painted on brown, sunbrunt arms.. Then the ribbed body turned slack with a protruding paunch as Emraan went on an eating  binge.  Jogi slowly emerged from my sketches.

“Jogi  explains Dibakar “is  a street-smart nobody from Jodhpur. Once a stud who landed small-time modeling assignment, he had slowly gone to seed, but there’s still a trace of the stud in him. It’s there in the jeans, worn well below the bulging belly, the sking tight shirts he wears.  Emraan still can’t get over it “(laughs Dibakar).

“All in all Jogi is still sexy in a dirty, grimy kind of way, with stale, dry sweat patches under his arms.  Many times  I’d holler for the sweat patches to be attached every time Emraan stepped n the sets” adds Dibakar.

“Emraan was startling and every time he sauntered onto the sets,  with his different walk I would watch the unit silently for reactions. This was the Jogi I’d dreamt of , it gave me gooseflesh to see him for real” he exclaims.

“I remember Emraan coming for some patchwork shots six months after we had wrapped up Shanghai, his face lean, his body taunt, his gait his own looking at him, it was impossible to relate him to the Jogi from my film” he states enthusiastically

On the other hand Abhay was just as amazing. Towards the climax, Krishnan has a long interaction with a key character. Abhay has been rehearsing for the scene since 6pm. When we have started rolling at 1 am, sitting at the monitor with my production designer, I had tears in my eyes,” admits Dibakar.

“The  ‘yay’ guy I knew was gone. In his place was my IAS officer with a stooped shoulder walk, moustache, glasses and a butter-wont melt expression on his face. The buttoned-up shirts, ties and trousers came with the costume, but the slight Tamil accent was all Abhay’s. He had put his conditions even before he shot. He made me sit in the make up van for  30 minutes with his diction coach and rehearse his lines. The efforts have paid off”,   informs Dibakar.

“It was unbelieveable watching the North Indian Jat boy turning into a Tam-Brahm bureaucrat!” adds Dibakar.

Emraan Hashmi on Jogi:

While Dibakar can’t stop singing praises of  his characters in the film, Emraan Hashmi says “ It was challenging and I  took it up  even if it meant losing the body I’d worked  for .”

“While shooting my scenes I  would often look into the mirror and  ask Dibakar  “couldn’t you have made me look worse?  And Dibakar would laugh.

“We  also got a local to record the lingo and fill us in on Jogi’s background. What would a small town wheeler-dealer who shoots marriage videos and porn movies do in the evening? Eat chicken and fish maybe? This kind of research and 10 odd workshops demolished me as an actor and brought Jogi to life”  says Emraan.

Abhay Deol on Krishna

“It was not easy playing Krishna. Dibakar almost grilled us not only on the looks, but the posture and the gait and everythingI play a Tamil Brahmin in the film, and being as IAS officer posted in Maharashtra, I needed to perfect a lingo that was largely clean Hindi with more Marathi than Tamil words, but spoke with a subtle south Indian accent, I worked with a diction coach for 10 days. He also accompanied me on the sets. I even learnt the Tamil alphabets” says Abhay.

Dibakar’s instructions were clear right from the start. “The look was that of a beauracrat…Buttoned up shirts and ties, glasses and a moustache that wasn’t like the one I’d worn in Manorama-Six Feet Under. The end result: unrecognizable”   such characters give you a different high” adds Abhay.

My focus is on quality, not quantity: Zarine Khan

Actress Zarine Khan has featured in just two films in her two-year-old career in Bollywood. She says it’s because she is more focused on quality, rather that quantity.

“My life has been very unplanned, but as I have said this before that I plan to do only quality work than quantity work. So that’s about it,” the 27-year-old said here at a screening of her latest release “Housefull 2″.

The 27-year-old, who did a cameo as a runaway bride in “Ready”, and now plays a bride in “Housefull 2″ again, says one shouldn’t take the plunge in real life unless he or she understands the responsibilities that come with married life.

“I am an Indian and I do believe in the institution of marriage. Every Indian girl dreams of getting married one day, but with marriage comes a lot of responsibility. So, I don’t think you should take a plunge for the heck of it unless you are not ready for the responsibility,” said Zarine.

Zarine debuted in Bollywood with “Veer” in 2010 and later did a cameo and an item song “Character dheela” in Salman Khan’s 2011 film “Ready”.

Currently, the actress also has “Partner 2″ in her kitty. It is a sequel to the 2007 film “Partner”. Zarine is also shooting for a Tamil film “Karikalan”.

‘Kya Super Kool…’ doesn’t make fun of K3G: Riteish

The promos of “Kya Super Kool Hai Hum” are out and have some sequences of “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” (K3G) embedded in them. Actor Riteish Deshmukh says that the scenes from Karan Johar’s family drama have been included to make fun of their sex comedy.

“We are not making fun of it (K3G). Actually we are making fun of our film, that our film is not a family drama. It’s not a film that can bring families together… It’s not about getting families together. It’s about having fun and enjoying ourselves,” Riteish told reporters Monday at the launch of the first look of “Kya Super Kool Hai Hum”.

Riteish also said that it was really brave of Karan to share the footage of his film and thanked him for his support.

“None of the footage that we have used in the film can be used without the permission of the filmmaker. Hats off to Karan who has a sense of humor…not many people would have the guts to give their films to be made fun off. All of us here would like to thank Karan for extending his support by giving the footage of K3G for our film,” said the actor.

Co-produced by Sachin Yardi and Ekta Kapoor, “Kya Super Kool Hai Hum” also stars Tusshar Kapoor, Neha Sharma and Sarah Jane Dias in the lead roles. The film is slated for an August release.

Emraan Hashmi’s tobacco woes!

Emraan Hashmi bid adieu to smoking a long time back but little did the actor knew he would have to chew tobacco soon. To play a foul-mouthed reporter in Dibakar Banerjee’s “Shanghai”, he had to re-start the habit.

On the first day of the shoot, Emraan was asked to chew tobacco for a scene and it was not a pleasant experience. Tobacco left him with such a distaste that Emraan almost threw up and felt giddy.

The director insisted that since his role required him to do it, there was no other way out. After a lot of discussions, Banerjee and Emraan came to the conclusion that the actor should chew tobacco.

“Dearest tv media and vans outside my home, please do not stress and work so hard. Its nothing, just another visit to my doctor!!,” he said.

Colors acquires ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’, signs Madhuri

Popular dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa”, which aired on entertainment channel Sony since 2006, has now been acquired by Colors, which has already signed up dancing diva Madhuri Dixit as one of the judges for the upcoming season of the celebrity-based show.

The show, inspired by international show “Dancing With The Stars”, saw Madhuri on the judges’ panel in its fourth season too. But that time, she was busy travelling between India and the US, where her family – her husband, and two kids – was then settled.

The actress has now shifted base back to India, and is expected to be more relaxed on the sets as she doesn’t have to think of travelling far away after every shooting schedule, said a source.

The upcoming season on Colors will get a ‘colourful’ makeover too, and the channel hopes to give it a metamorphosis in terms of style and look.

“Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” has so far gone through four seasons. It features celebrities and well-known faces, who train with professional dance partners and perform various styles of dancing. The judges panel usually consists of three, but the other two judges are yet to be formally announced.

Chances are choreographer-director Remo D’Souza will also be seen as a repeat on the panel this season.
