A true celebration of excellence in Indian Cinema, the 57th Idea Filmfare Awards 2011 held at the Reliance MediaWorks Studios, Film City, Goregoan on the 29th of January, 2012 was a larger than life spectacle, a glorious representation of its legacy of over five decades.
Through the years, Filmfare has become the most awaited event while the film fraternity as well as the audience look forward to this night of nights. With a slew of performances by the biggest names in filmdom, the annual Idea Filmfare Awards is now an extravagant gala of glitz, glamour, excitement and entertainment.
This year’s Idea Filmfare Awards held a special significance as the 2500th trophy was presented at the award ceremony. The figure includes awards presented till date across ceremonies through the years. The 2500th Black Lady was studded with 4000 diamonds weighing 47 carat of IJ colour and VSSI clarity. It took 27 skilled karigars approximately 225 man hours to craft these diamonds on the glorious Black Lady. Coincidently, the Indian film industry has entered its 100th year thus all celebrities and dignitaries in attendance at the award ceremony were eager to know who would be the lucky winner of this exclusive trophy. Filmfare was honoured and thrilled to award the 2500thBlack Lady to the music maestro of our industry, AR Rehman for Rockstar.
The 57th Idea Filmfare Awards was hosted by the kings of cool – the very suave Shahrukh Khan and charming Ranbir Kapoor, who brought the house down with their wit and humour. The performances were power packed as the vivacious Kareena Kapoor unleashed her magic and held the audience spellbound while she grooved to hits like Teri Meri, Desi Beats, Criminal and Bhare Naina from her blockbuster films of last year. The ravishing Priyanka Chopra raised the temperature a good few notches as she performed the ‘Junglee Billi’ act on the title track of Don 2. Bollywood’s cutest couple – Riteish and Genelia re-created their romance on stage as they danced to evergreen hits like Pehla Nasha, Chand Chhupa, TeriOre, Mehndi Laga ke and more. The sultry and sexy Deepika Padukone had the crowd tapping their feet as she rocked the stage with ‘Dum Maro Dum’ and ‘Tu Mera Hero’.
And finally, the King Khan stole the show with his ‘Chammak Challo’ moves and captivated the entire atmosphere as he performed on ‘Katey Nahi Kat Te’ and ‘Dreamgirl’.
The Coke Studio – Shaan with Chinnaponnu, Javed Ali with Sourav Moni, Leslie Lewis and Bondo gave a tribute to Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor with a musical performance of their super hit songs through the years.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the hottest vamp and glamourous item girl of yester years – Aruna Irani, who received the honour amidst accolades and praise for her outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema as an actor, director and producer.
The 57th Idea Filmfare Awards 2011 will be telecast on the 19th of February 2012 exclusively on Sony Entertainment Television.
Vidya Balan looks for missing husband at railway station
It seems mere music launches and interviews won’t suffice a film’s promotion. Now-a-days film marketing has evolved to such an extent that reel characters come to life in the real world to create a buzz about their film.
As per sources, Vidya made an appearance in her pregnant look from the filmKAHAANI at one of the railway stations in Mumbai. And like in the film, where Vidya goes searching for her husband at every nook and corner, she probed the people present at the site about her husband as a part of the promotional campaign.
As Vidya Balan arrived the crowd went berserk watching their favourite actress. She then went ahead to the platform and even boarded a local train.
Vidya previously stepped out in a pregnant look at the trailer launch of the film. While unveiling the trailer, Vidya said it in style, ”I am six months pregnant and I have come all over from London to search my missing husband. Will you help me out in finding my husband? But that has to be really quick as my delivery is on 9th March 2012 (hinting about the release date of the film).”
Looks like after tantalizing the audience with her THE DIRTY PICTURE, Vidya is all set to enchant with a new KAHAANI!
In today’s time when hot item numbers are in great demand and add sparkle to films, Saif Ali Khan is treading a different route with his upcoming film AGENT VINOD. Saif is reiterating the magic of ‘Mujra’ in this film, which seemed to have vanished from Hindi cinema. Saif’s beloved and co-star Kareena Kapoor will be seen doing her first Mujra song in the Sriram Raghavan directed film.
When we probed the actor-cum-producer about the idea behind having ‘Mujra’, Saif unequivocally said, ”We haven’t seen a classic Mujra happening on-screen for a long time. We had enough discussions over it – like should we do an item? Should we get another big star and do a hot number? As most Hindi films have hot songs. Hot in terms of outfits and the presentation of the camera. And finally we thought we would go slightly different and make it interesting in terms of expressions and music.”
Not just Saif even his business partner at Illuminati Films, Dinesh Vijyan wanted to have a Mujra than a raunchy item number in the film.
Saif divulges, ”Even Dinesh was also pushing for Mujra rather than a raunchy kind of nightclub song.”
He further asserts, ”In AGENT VINOD raunchy night club song is there in the background and that’s happening most of the time. We needed to make our item little more different.”
AGENT VINOD commences his mission on 23rd March 2012.
It so happened that the makers of the film recently organised a special screening for social activist Anna Hazare at Ralegan Siddhi. Probably, keeping Anna in mind the makers decided to tentatively edit the item song for the special screening.
The song has Veena as the face of a political party. And during the election time Veena’s character has to perform to gather votes for the party.
Even while the AGNEEPATH team was celebrating its Republic Day box office performance, which was marginally better than BODYGUARD‘s first day, and apparently exulting over it, the second day (Friday) collections had registered a dramatic and abnormal drop of approximately 50% to 60% across the board. It’s not that BODYGUARD’s collections had not taken a beating after the bumper Eid day, but they had dropped by a mere 15%. AGNEEPATH producer Karan Johar must have been aware of this development while he was talking to the press on Friday evening. The media persons who were in the know of things chose to keep mum, and preferred not to play a spoilsport. Was it a deliberate move by the producer to stem the tide of impending disaster by keeping the positive buzz going in the media?
This is a bolt from the blue for everyone, including the trade pundits. The exhibitors who have paid exorbitant MGs will be a worried lot now. Everything hinges on the box office scenario on Saturday and Sunday. The collections should have as dramatic a rise as the fall on Friday. It will be disastrous for the film otherwise, signifying its wholesale rejection by the audience and a strong undercurrent of negative word of mouth, enough to seal the film’s box office fate. There were stray reports that over-dramatised violent scenes were found repulsive by family audiences.
Even if the distributors break even in the final analysis, which is certain since there are no important releases next week, it will be extremely disappointing news for the film trade that had pinned big hopes on the star-studded extravaganza and theChikni Chameli… item number to pull in the crowds and revive the sagging industry morale after the abject debacle of Abbas-Mustan’s PLAYERS in the beginning of the year.
For his next under production film “Tamanchey” he has almost doubled up as an Executive Producer, helping out the first time Producer Suryaveer Singh.
Since the director of the film is also a first timer, Nikhil has been personally involved in assembling a worthy Technical Crew and
especialists for the film. So much so that many corporate honchos are now taking note and talking of how “Tamanchey” is being shot with precise planning and looking like an A-List film despite a modest budget.
“Tamanchey” also boasts of a visual director from Hollywood. A visua director is a principal technician in Hollywood Films but it ll
perhaps be the first time that such a technician has been appointed for a Hindi Feature film.
In addition to the Camera Crew which is from Hollywood as well, the film has a ‘Song Director’ who is leaving no stone un-turned to make the songs look visually appealing.
Sources say in “Tamanchey”, which is an intense Love-Story set against the backdrop of crime, Nikhil Dwivedi (who after the success of ‘Shor in the City’ is suddenly back in the solo lead bracket), plays a character loosely inspired from the Underworld Don Abu Salem, though the producer vehemently denies any such inspiration or association.
Anil Ambani owned Reliance DreamWorks garners 11 Oscar Nominations for three films- War Horse, The Help and Real Steel. This is the first time an Indian owned company has been nominated in such a big way at the Oscars.
The most prestigious Best Film category that nominates 9 films has two films from the Reliance DreamWorks stable- War Horse and The Help.
Steven Spielberg directed War Horse has been nominated in 6 categories that include The Best Picture, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Original Score (John Williams), Art Direction and Cinematography. War Horse releases in India on 10th February.
The Help has been nominated for The Best Picture, Best Actress (Viola Davis), Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer).
Hugh Jackman starrer sci- fi thriller Real Steel has been nominated for Best achievement in Visual Effects.
350 copies of Anupam Kher’s ‘The Best Thing About You Is You’ were sent to Jaipur for the Lit Festival. Reports say that the bookshop at the festival grounds sold the entire lot and book orders had to be placed in large numbers. ‘The Best Thing About You Is You’, thus becomes the highest selling title at the Jaipur Literature Festival. A recently conducted AC Neilsen survey reports that the book in its first week was on number 250. In the second week it was number 34 and now in the third week, it is number 18. Success of the book has been talked about on Facebook, Twitter as well as by Penguin Publication. Next week onwards, contests and other schemes for readers and book buyers will be part of the promotion for the book.

Singer Kailash Kher recently released his new album “Rangeele”. This album which is recorded by his music company “Kailasa” has one conversational song called “Hudkaan mann biti” which is co-sung by Kailash’s 2 year old son Kabir. About this song Kailash says “I remember, when I was 5 years of age, while playing with my friends we had a rule that the person who would lose the game had to carry the winner on a piggy back and go from one place to another saying “Hudkann mann biti”. So while I was writing the songs for my album “Rangeele” I was reminded of my childhood days and I thought why not share these memories with my son. And this is how the song “Hudkann mann biti” was born.
B-town’s latest news is that Tanu Weds Manu director Aanand L Rai has signed Tamil actor Dhanush for his upcoming filmRaanjhnaa. The director has been quoted saying that, “For the past six months, I’ve been looking for a simple boy to play the lead inRaanjhnaa. My requirement was a man who could look vulnerable on screen. When I saw Dhanush in the Tamil film Aadukalam (for which he won the National award), I liked him immediately. He looks very ordinary and honest, and that was the demand of the character.”
Apparently Dhanush is not well versed with Hindi, but this won’t pose as a barrier for him working in Bollywood! The actor/singer is keen to explore this part of the industry and learn the local language and culture.
When quizzed about the movie, the director adds, “The film is an intense love story. Just like my film Tanu Weds Manu, the film and its characters will take you to Delhi, Punjab, Chennai, etc.”
Dhanush too is very excited about the project. News is that the director had approached him for the movie before Kolaberi Di happened. “It’s a big deal to get a launch like this at the beginning of my career here. Aanand’s script is different from regular cinema; it’s one of those ‘made to make a difference’ kind of films”, quips the actor.
The actor who recently visited Banaras with director Anand Rai was amazed with the culture and the traditions in a different part of the country. Buzz is that he is even planning to hire a coach to learn Hindi. He is convinced that by the time the shoot gets over, he will be able to communicate fluently in the local language.
B-town’s superstar Ajay Devgn was spotted visiting a famous Mumbai Gurudwara with his entire family and cousins recently!
One of the little known facts about the actor is that he actually is a true blue Punjabi and that he regularly prays at the Gurudwara with his whole family! The actor was seen at the famous Gurudwara at Four Bungalows, Andheri west, along with his parents Mrs Veena Devgn and Mr Veeru Devgn, wife Kajol, children Nysa and Yug and cousins Vikrant and Dharmendra.

Remakes are in, but seem to be disastrous like the recent Don2. Karan Johar seems to have steered clear with repeating mistakes made by his contemporaries in tinsel town. Agneepath with superstar Hrithik Roshan is not an iota from the original. That’s what sets apart Dharma Productions and KJo’s over-fertile mind and ingenuous brainwave from making it an enjoyable film.
Giving out the storyline before the film has released would be not right on my part. Highlights of the film are the restrained (when required) and intense (moments of sheer delight) acting of Hrithik. He knows that he would be compared to Big B’s persona of play Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. Although the yesteryear superstar got loads of flak for his innovative voice modulation, the audiences never accepted him…this is what Hrithik fortunately didn’t venture into.
The scene stealers are Sunju baba and especially Rishi Kapoor who has given a mind-blowing performance. Priyanka Chopra is just a prop and of course Chikni Chameli Katrina although a highlight has already been blasted all over the channels. So the novelty of the item number doesn’t really seem eagerly awaited on-screen. Commendable performance to be worth mentioned is the sweet little young girl who charms you with her flawless performance.
A must watch for all those Hrithik Roshan fans. Sunju baba seems to have matured and it definitely proves that you need an able director and a strong ghost director like KJo to clinch the soul from this frivolous actor. Music isn’t much worth talking about. The action sequences are worth a dekho. KJo’s shines again with his vengeance to prove to Sanjay Leela Bhansali that he is no bubble-gum hit machine.
Watch it and you will surely vouch what a disaster Don2 is compared to this remake. At least it has a soul and a sensible storyline to boot.
