Film Bazaar: Zoya Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin creative tryst

Afternoon at Film Bazzar saw the coming together of Industry contemporaries like Zoya Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, and Sanjay Suri for a panel session on Are New Age Filmmakers Trendsetters?

Though the opinions of the panelists on the idea of “trendsetting” differed they agreed that the changes that have taken place in the Indian cinema today are due to the changing demands and needs of their audience. Zoya Akhtar who is a new age film director said,“it is about making the money and every venture starts out with wanting to be a commercial success but said the film she writes, directs has to ultimately appeal to her as director before it can be sought to appeal to the viewers . She also said expecting a pan indian hit is slightly un realistic as the success of the film can be fragmented and may work in some parts and might bomb in others. Vishal Bharwaj a veteran film maker seconded Zoya’s opinion on being his own most important audience and said “I make movies for myself” With relation indie space to Sanjay Suri explains why being an Independent Filmmaker is difficult in India. ‘A film that works in Mumbai could or could not be liked or seen in Chennai, India itself is a big challenge, I hope to make a film that firstly works all over India and also overseas.

Actor Abhay Deol, who has made a name for himself in new wave cinema, also said that despite being Punjabi, he is not into watching Punjabi movies. “I don’t watch Punjabi movies. My Punjabi is also not that good,” he said responding to a question.

Deol, who has worked with Akhtar in her film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, said that the sub-titling could help more audience to watch the regional cinema.  Kalki Koechlin, Indian actress with French descent, however, said that Anurag Kashyap (her husband) drags her to see Marathi films.
Referring to Marathi movie `Gandh,’ she said that the film was really excellent and she liked it. “I really enjoyed watching Marathi films. It is something that should be more accessible,” she added.

The issue of new generation filmmakers watching regional films was raised during the Knowledge Session by one of the audience.
One of the participants, introducing himself as a film critique, claimed that `few Hindi filmmakers are being highlighted as a torch bearers of the Indian film industry.’

Deol rebutting the allegations said that every filmmaker is having a set of audience which he caters to. “You don’t compare one to another as per your judgements,” he said.

Film Bazaar is the concept by National Films Division Corporation (NFDC), which is a business to business platform for the filmmakers and buyers.

The game ‘DON KA GANG’ is based on the movie DON 2. It has a set of challenges that the players have to go through in order to complete the levels and thus be included in the final 10, who stand a chance to meet the DON himself. The player has 5 levels to complete and each level gets even harder than the first, but closer to the reward- a chance to be recruited into the DON’s gang and meet Shahrukh Khan.

The soundtrack for DON 2 is also live on Get hold of some of the finest tunes composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Javed Akhtar. The album begins with a monologue by SRK signaling the comeback of the Don. This is followed by the title song ‘Zaraa Dil Ko Thaam Lo’ which takes off from ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ and brings back the sound of the early 80s in a fresh new presentation. Shaan’s version of ‘Main Hoon Don’ from Don – The Chase Begins Again, is presented by KK in Don 2 as ‘Mujhko Pehchaanlo. The fun element however is provided by ‘The King Is Back – Theme’ – a four minute long piece that takes forward the anthem of ‘Don’ with Sunitha Sarathi providing a fitting tribute to the song. Big B dedicates poem for Beti B

Like any grandfather megastar Amitabh Bachchan is extremely happy and enjoying his time playing with his little granddaughter, Aishwarya and Abhishek’s first baby.

Big B writes on his blog, “She sleeps through most of the day except for feeds and has been most obedient and well behaved! Ha ha ha… The moments spent with her even though one encounters shut eyes, are the most pleasant and fulfilling,”

The overjoyed grandpa has also dedicated a poem for Beti B, a name coined for the little one, which he published on his blog. The poem too was actually written by his father, the late poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan when Big B was born.

Big B blogs, “She is home! And nothing could give us all greater joy and happiness .. There is so much to say and so much emotion, but I think excerpts from my Fathers poem, written at the time I was born, say enough!”

The Poem is as follows:

फुल्ल कमल,

गोद नवल,

मोद नवल,

गेह में विनोद नवल।

नवल दृश्य,

नवल दृष्टि,

जीवन का नव भविष्य,

जीवन की नवल सृष्टि।

Not that Emraan plays ‘dirty’ always

Emraan Hashmi, quite literally, is going places to promote his upcoming flick THE DIRTY PICTURE!

Emraan Hashmi went on a promo overdrive for THE DIRTY PICTURE in Delhi a few days back creating mass hysteria – from visiting the Parliament to travelling on the Delhi Metro to seeking blessings at the Nizamuddin Dargah.

Minutes before his prayers, he decided to do it the right way by buying himself a white kurta from a shop close to the Dargah.

For once, there was nothing dirty about what Emraan bhai did!

Katrina chooses Pitbull over Ranbir!

International singing sensation Armando Christian Perez a.k.a. Pitbull is coming to town! And the fans can’t wait to grab on this rare opportunity and join their beloved music sensation this December. But guess what? The fans have some serious competition awaiting them! Pitbull has a celebrity admirer here in India, which is none other than the gorgeous superstar diva – Katrina Kaif.

The lady who is known for her timeless beauty, outstanding acting skills and individualistic style, is undoubtedly admired by her fans across India. However, this ‘lucky mascot’ of Bollywood is actually a big fan of Pitbull and his music.

Hence, when the news of Pitbull’s arrival to India hit the media circuits, Katrina Kaif couldn’t stop herself from expressing a desire to meet this globally celebrated musician. Whether Katrina will be able to meet Pitbull and bring any luck to his concert too has yet to be seen. But it seems like; Ranbir Kapoor isn’t Katrina Kaif’s Rockstar after all.

There’s a twist to the tale. It seems the organizers are also in dialogue with Ranbir’s team after the success of ROCKSTAR for a meet and greet with Pitbull. Wouldn’t it be such a love triangle if the three superstars come on stage together?

SRK shoots with real life prisoners

The fearless Don aka Shahrukh Khan has hit the nail hard and bang on with his dreadlocked look in the film as seen in the trailers. The star, who sports a special haircut for his jail sequence, has been getting muddy and dirty as he packs punches with the inmates. Shahrukh shot for this scene at the Malacca Prison in Malaysia.

Explaining the sequence, a crew member said, “Don has an ace up his sleeves and has already masterminded a prison break.”

Shahrukh Khan takes on the inmates of the jail and those who dared to question how he landed up behind the high walls. The actor shot with several local Malaysian artists for this sequence which was physically taxing.

The film was shot in a real prison with real prisoners behind the jail and a complete section of the prison block was made available to shoot. In order to avoid any hitches, special crew t-shirts were made to differentiate crewmembers from the prisoners as it was a high security zone. None of the crew members were allowed to carry their mobile phones and laptops.

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and director Farhan Akhtar who is also the director of the flick, DON 2 is slated to break into screens on the 21st December 2011.

Nargis Fakhri wants Superstar Khans as her future heroes

After Ranbir Kapoor, first timer Nargis Fakhri is now eyeing Khans. Though the lady garnered a mixed critical response for herself with Ranbir, Nargis feels that it was a great experience nonetheless and now it is time to scale further heights.

“She hasn’t signed any new film since ROCKSTAR and is presently going through a settling phase. She has a team around her which is working on ensuring that what she does next is something which is even bigger and better than her debut affair,” says a close associate of the actor, “After doing a ROCKSTAR, she is in a position where she can neither afford to lie low nor pick up anything that comes her way. It has to be something substantial and the actors who top her wish list are none other than Khans.”

One wonders though whether her Khan dream would indeed realise soon. After all Aamir does only one film at a time and cast for his DHOOM 3 is already locked. Ditto for Shahrukh Khan who has Kareena Kapoor as his on-screen partner for the Rohit Shetty film which is rumoured to be titled CHENNAI EXPRESS.

“Seems like Nargis’ best bet is Salman Khan here. Though he is already booked for next year with Katrina Kaif and Sonakshi Sinha as his leading ladies for EK THA TIGER and DABANGG 2/KICK respectively, there are slots open for SHER KHAN and NO ENTRY MEIN ENTRY. She may just get fortunate,” says an industry source.

Also, if Nargis comes out her Khan fascination then Akshay Kumar is another leading man who does films by dozens and hence always has slots available for newer leading ladies. With casting yet to be finalised for ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI 2 and KHILADI 786 – MADE IN PUNJAB, Nargis could well be trying her luck there as well.

Ask Nargis about how she wants to extend her wish-list of actors and she says, “Of course whether it is Shahrukh, Salman, Aamir  or any other Khan, I would like to work with them all. Each of these senior actors is so different and I am so much looking forward to making some more amazing films with them. Of course a script has to be great too but with these actors in, I am sure all else will fall in place.”

She knows how to manage herself after all she is a home-breaker.”

Bachchans: Happy to have a daughter

CHECK OUT: Aishwarya with Beti B arrives back home

A wave of happiness is passing through the Bachchan family as after months of speculations, actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gave birth to a baby girl on Nov 16 morning at Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai.

“The soft innocence of nature rests in my arms, oblivious of what else happens around her. Occasionally she opens her large and what looks now to be eyes of the lighter hue, which those that have dealt with similar, know shall change with time,” Big B blogged after spending the first day with his grandchild.

“Often the gentlest of smiles quiver across her pouted upper lip, the shut eyes bringing expression through the brows and the settling down to that dream she must dream. Her head covered in the littlest of head gear she will ever adorn, snuggles into her mini quilt of varied colors dominated by the pink softness of its material,” he described.

Ash and Abhishek Bachchan tied knots in 2007.

Neha Dhupia’s peppy song has a painful past

Neha Dhupia would be soon seen gyrating to a dance number ‘Haiyya Haiyya’ for her upcoming film PAPPU CAN’T DANCE SAALA. While the song has an out and out happy mood to it with a rhythmic base ensuring that it brings one on the dance floors, there is a story behind what really meets the eye (or rather reaches the ears). Apparently Neha’s voice for the song, Manasi Scott, had to battle some trouble of her own before ‘Haiyya Haiyya’ could turn into a reality.

“Manasi is making her playback comeback in the film. However it didn’t turn out to be smoothest of them all though,” informs a source, “As luck would have it, she ended up with high fever and a sore throat on the day of the recording. Though she is usually quite super-quick and confident, this time around Manasi had the most nervous recording session ever. She had to regularly pop painkillers since her throat ached every time she sang the higher notes. Ultimately it boiled down to music director Malhar for taking her through.”

Since ‘Haiyya Haiyya’ is a high energy dance number, it required Manasi to be hitting the high notes often. Malhar just asked her to concentrate on style and emotion while leaving the rest to him. Incidentally, ‘Haiyya Haiyya’ is the only song from the music CD which finds a place in the film as well.

“Film’s director Saurabh Shukla too was very impressed with the singer/composer team here since in ‘Haiyya Haiyya’ he got the kind of sound he was looking for,” the source continues.

With Vinay Pathak in the title role of ‘Pappu’ along with Rajat Kapoor, PAPPU CAN’T DANCE SAALA releases all over on 16th December.
